CLIndex Help
Using the Shell
You use the keybard to type commands into the Shell window. Make sure you
have clicked inside the window with the left mouse button before typing.
Press the Return or Enter key when you have finished typing.
Make sure that all commands are typed as given in the main text. Only type
examples when instructed to do so, you may be attempting to access a file or
device that does not exist.
Ensure that you have spelled the words of the command correctly - AmigaDOS
cannot tell if you have made a slight spelling error, it will denounce the
whole line as being garbage! Also make sure that all spaces are entered -
Echo "Hello World"
and
Echo"Hello World"
illustrate this - try typing each of these
to see what happens.
The character after a device name (Df0:, Df1:, RAM: etc) is a colon : not a
semi-colon ; The colon is produced by holding Shift while pressing the key
portraying both characters. Also note that the number 0 and the letter O
are different, and cannot be freely exchanged. The same is true for the
letter I and the number 1. Df0: works, DfO: does not.
If some commands (especially CLVersion) fail, make sure you booted from the
CLIndex product disk. CLIndex contains some files not present on your
Workbench disk. If you have installed CLIndex onto your hard drive, make
sure the drawer in which the program is kept is assigned the name
CLIndex:
.
(If you have installed CLIndex onto your hard-drive you probably do not need
this help file anyway). A hard-drive install script will arrive if and when
I get a hard-drive. I would hate to include a script then discover it did
not work!
If you have problems when running other programs from CLIndex, use them with
your own Workbench disk. CLIndex's alternative keyboard mapping may cause
problems (usually this will be if a program uses the HELP key).
If you can't read the coloured writing, load the Palette preferences tool
from your Workbench disk and alter the palette until it is more æsthetically
pleasing then use the Save button to permanently store this setting. Make
sure your CLIndex is write enabled. KEEP YOUR MAIN CLINDEX DISK
WRITE-PROTECTED AT ALL TIMES, AND MAKE ANY CHANGES LIKE THIS ON A BACKUP
COPY. READ THE FILE "DOUBLE CLICK ME FIRST" TO FIND OUT HOW TO COPY A DISK
Remember, NEVER use your original copy because if you damage it, you are up
doggy doo drive without an engine. Or something.
IF YOU ARE UNSURE OF THE PROCESS.
